India third most popular country for sourcing talent

India is the third most popular country for sourcing foreign talent after China and the US, a survey by global recruiting firm Manpower Inc released Tuesday said.

The Borderless Workforce Survey conducted in 27 countries also showed India received the highest remittances ($27 billion) from nationals working abroad.

It is closely followed by China ($25.7 billion), Mexico ($25 billion) and the Philippines ($17 billion).

"The demand for Indian skilled labour is the highest in the US followed by the Gulf. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for engineers in the oil and gas sector and aviation," said Manpower India managing director Naresh Malhan.

Others in demand are nurses, drivers and construction workers, he said.

The survey also ranked India third in the list of the top 10 countries considered an economic threat to other nations.

Of the 26 countries surveyed other than India, all countries with the exception of Costa Rica and Peru believe that India provides competitive threat to their own country's ability to compete economically.

So far as Indian employers are concerned, they consider China, the US and the UK as the biggest competitive threats.

According to the survey, Chinese employers - followed by those in India - were the least concerned about migration of talents to foreign countries.

In India, employers in public administration, education, services, finance, insurance, real estate and manufacturing are most concerned about this, while those in wholesale and retail, transport, utilities, mining, oil and gas sectors are the least bothered.

“While it's true that we need to do more to keep our most talented workers, we must also consider how we can strengthen our collective employer 'brand' to attract talented workers from overseas,” said Malhan.

Some of the key findings of the survey:

  • India is the third most popular country for sourcing foreign talent; 11 of the 26 countries surveyed other than India sourced foreign talent from India.
  • India receives the highest remittances ($27 billion) from nationals working abroad, followed by China ($25.7 billion), Mexico ($25 billion) and the Philippines ($17 billion).
  • India has the highest percentage of nationals working abroad with tertiary education. Of the nearly 2.2 millions of Indians working abroad, 53 percent have acquired tertiary education.
  • India ranks third in the list of Top 10 countries believed to be an economic threat to other nations.
  • Indian employers are second least concerned about government and businesses not doing enough to slow the outward migration of talent.

Leaders - Pencil Down and Listen Up

Being accessible makes you more valuable to the people you lead and the organization. Staff must feel comfortable approaching you when they need to. The benefits to you are that you keep your finger on the pulse of the organization and are better equipped to avert problems and take advantages of opportunities as they occur. Also by using your accessibility as a teaching tool in the form of probing questions you are creating a training session that conditions your subordinates to think through their concerns, questions or problems. Your work time as a leader is just as valuable your subordinate's. Don't waste it by being the answer man or woman.

There are always exceptions to the rule. You will be giving direction in emergency situations or when facing time deadlines.

People know the right answers and as leaders we have the obligation to create an environment that supports thinking out loud and the confidence to express views, questions, comments and concerns without fear or judgment. You are a confidence builder, not a creator of self doubt. Become a force multiplier. Teach your staff to think by effectively using questions rather that statements or direction.

Ask others about themselves, at the same time, be on guard not to talk too much about yourself.
- Mortimer Jerome Adler

Let's talk about listening. Most of us listen with the intent to respond immediately to views that do not conform to our own. In our desire to get our point across much of the information being given to us is lost because we are too busy formulating a response. This attack listening causes some important interpersonal problems. First you are sending a negative message that says you do not value the information and the individual presenting it. Second you are demonstrating a lack of respect for the individual and sending the message that only your views and opinions are important.

The result is that employees will not come to you and share information, comments, suggestions or concerns. As a result your performance and your company's will suffer. It may even lead to the loss of your job. The fastest way to become an ex-leader is to be known as someone who does not listen.

I am sure you have heard the reason God gave us two ears and one mouth is that we're supposed to listen twice as much as we speak.

The best way to ensure that you are listening twice as much as you speak is simply to shut up and listen.

Try the following techniques to improve your listening skills.

1. Repeat in your mind's voice every word that is being said to you. Think of it as echoing what you hear. I guarantee you won't be blurting out responses. Practice this skill during your commute, repeating in your mind's voice what you hear on the radio. An added benefit of using this technique is you will remember information you hear much easier and more completely.

2. Ask questions for clarification using a thoughtful gentle tone of voice.

3. Nod your head, use the standard non verbal um hum, aha, etc.

4. Look the person in the eyes and ask if he or she would mind if you took a few notes. People are always flattered when you ask permission to take notes.

5. Prior to giving your response summarize what was said to you. This extra effort demonstrates that you listened intently and understand what was said. If no correction is necessary, make your response.

Studies have demonstrated that the best conversationalists are the best listeners, who ask specific questions that help to move the conversation along. When you take a step back and think about who controls the conversation it's the person asking the questions. So there is no need for you to practice attack listening. You will get your views across through the questions you ask and your staff will have tremendous trust and confidence in you.

Everybody wins with good listening skills.

Silences make the real conversations between friends. Not the saying but the never needing to say is what counts. - Margaret Lee Runbeck

Ten Reasons Why People Should Consider a Career in the Hospitality Industry

Little did I know back in 1979 when I took a bartending course that I would have the opportunity to travel , make a great income , have flexibility to do the things I wanted while working , and meet great people along the way. The top ten reasons I am still waiting on tables and loving it are the following.

Due to the increasing labour shortage there is a growing demand for leaders in the hospitality industry as never before so when you become proficient in what you do the opportunity to make your mark is easier and the rewards greater.

As the need for serious and skilled employees increases in the future, working conditions will improve so that you will not see the long laborious 12 - 14 hours shifts that some workers face nowadays. Unless the owner wants to see continued high turnover in his establishment the main onus will be to do whatever he or she can to keep the good employees they have.

There is no fear like in other industries who have global competition and layoffs to contend with of being out of work in the hospitality industry. People have to eat and find a way to socialize with one another and the restaurant industry is one of the last oasis to do just that.

A lot of people are attached to a palm pilot , blackberry , and e-mail long after they have left the office while in the hospitality industry once you leave your work it stays there till you come back. No taking it home with you. In other words you have a life outside of work undisturbed.

Both my wife and I are working in the industry and together we work about 45 hours a week in total allowing at least one of us to be home to take care of our young children all the time. Without having to do daycare we have more input in our children's life and are able to participate in school activities etc.

You have the flexibility to have a life outside of work. With the abundance of labour needed in the hospitality industry you can literally work any hours you want if you are good enough.Do not be afraid to ask for what hours you can work as nowadays if you are good enough the owner will gladly hire you. Then when you need time away for family outings you will get it.

The opportunity to travel is huge unlike any other industry. To be able to pick up and go wherever you want insures you paid vacations anywhere. Learn a second language if you can. See the world. This is an industry you can meet people from all over and learn different cultures and become a world person rather than a local inhabitant.

Needless to say you always eat good food and drink good wine. Need I say more!

Every day is different unlike an office job where you meet no new people in some instances for months. In this industry people you meet and work with always are very interesting indeed. This also affects positively how to cope with all kinds of personalities and situations that can happen immediately with no warning.

Because of the physical nature of the industry where one can be on their feet most of the time you can get your exercise and keep your waist line thin. So you get to stay looking younger longer.

In conclusion , the hospitality industry has a lot going for it so I say to everyone involved know what you want to get out of it and strive to be the best at what you do and you will be rewarded. Trust me!

What Google Thinks Of Your Site?
By Titus Hoskins (c) 2008

How Google views your site does matter if you want to succeed online because Google has become the dominant search engine on the web. It now has over 60% of the U.S. search engine market. In other countries around the world that percentage rises to 80% or more. In addition, the Google Brand Name has solidly permeated the popular psyche and any top rankings within Google will bring much weight and prestige along with all that traffic.

If you're a webmaster, you will already know how vital Google is to the success of your site, especially if you rely upon organic keyword rankings for your traffic. This free organic traffic from Google is highly desired by webmasters because it is extremely targeted and delivers high conversion rates.

Generate Leads - Close More Deals!

In trying to reach the highest rankings possible, I (like most webmasters) have to be constantly aware of what Google thinks of my site and content. As a webmaster and marketer I have always geared my onlíne marketing towards Google. I have spent years building my keyword rankings within Google; if you take out the fact that it has nearly driven me insane, it has mostly been a positive experience.

This experience has also shown me it is indeed important for anyone to know how Google views and rates your site or content. The more knowledge you have, the better able you will be to tackle any obstacles and challenges that will come your way.

SERPs Is The Only Opinion That Counts

And like most webmasters, I try to find out as much about Google as is humanly possible, but Google doesn't give up its secrets easily. In fact, many webmasters would argue the only true opinion Google has of your site is shown in their SERPs - if your keywords/pages are ranked in the number one spots in Google's "Search Engine Results Pages" then Google must think your site or content deserves to be there.

However, there are other ways of finding out how Google is viewing your content. Below are several Google webmaster tools and things you can do to discover just how Google views your site or pages. They will give you a better picture of what Google thinks about your site.

Checking Your Content/Keywords In Google

One handy tool that will show you what Google thinks your pages consist of is located here:

    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Just type in your URL and tick off website content and you will get a listing of the major keywords Google has for your content. If your targeted keyword or keywords are not listed, then you have to do some re-writing.

Get Search Engine Rankings You Can Be Proud Of!

Checking Your Backlinks In Google

If you want to find out how many backlinks your site has in Google, just open up Google Search and type in:

    link:yourURL

and it will show you the number of backlinks you have.

Since Google doesn't give you all your existing backlinks, many webmasters also use Yahoo! to find a more exact number of links your site has on the web.

Just open Yahoo! and type in: linkdomain:yourURL

Now whether Google is using or considering all these backlinks is the big question? Finding the exact number of backlinks you have in Google has always been a problem because Google is not giving you the exact number or at least this is the general opinion of most SEO experts.

Another way I monitor my links in Google is to place quotation marks around my site name or my name "bizwaremagic" or "titus hoskins" and do a search in Google. This gives me the pages containing references to me or my site. This is usually 50,000 to 100,000 pages, I have also noticed my online income usually correlates as this number goes up or down.

Checking Your Indexed Pages In Google

Obviously, it is very important for you to know what content the search engines have indexed from your site. You can also check to see how your links are displayed and to see if any titles or descriptions are missing from your pages.

You can see how many of your pages are indexed in Google by using the site command.

Just type into Google Search:

    site:yourURL

A little while back, having your pages indexed in Google's Supplemental Index caused webmasters much stress as it seemed Google was judging these pages as "second class" pages. Since then, Google no longer uses the Supplementary Label in grading pages but that doesn't mean a supplementary index doesn't exist; just that Google has promised to crawl and consider these pages as well in any search query.

Forget Expensive PPC Advertising - There is an Alternative!

Checking Your Google Cache

You can also check to see the Google Cache of your site by using the cache command. You will also discover when it was last retrieved.

Just type into Google Search:

    cache:yourURL

Checking Your PageRank Within Google

Another tricky issue is PageRank. This is supposed to be the heart of Google's ranking system created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin; each link is considered a "vote" for your page and the higher the number of "votes" you have, the higher the PR your page receives. However, again Google is using "smoke and mirrors" to conceal your true PageRank mainly to cut out abuse and manipulation of their results. Some experts say PageRank still counts, other say it doesn't.

You can check your Google PageRank here:

From my own experiences, I have receíved more traffic when my site was at PR4 than I receíved when it was at PR6. What's important is getting high rankings for your targeted keywords... if you get top spots, it doesn't matter if your main index page (site) is PR4 or PR6, you'll still get the same amount of traffic. In other words, don't become too fixated on PageRank because Google in many cases is not letting you see the true PR of a webpage.

I would like to add one point to the whole PageRank issue and that has to do with perception. If you're running an online business, then having a PR8 site does matter for it will bring in more business and customers (especially if you're in the SEO industry) mainly because of the "perceived value" of your site or business.

What Google thinks does matter!

In other words, what Google thinks of your site can play a major role in your success. Mainly because, like it or hate it, Google has become the supreme authority on the web and what they say, counts. Therefore, you should always be paying special attention to just what Google is saying about your site and acting upon that knowledge accordingly.
