So you've finally graduated and looking to take the next step in your life. It can be a very scary and daunting time; it will essentially affect the rest of your life. We are here to help clear things up for you, as well as helping to point you in the right direction if it's advice you are after. For the first time, you are now on your own and have to fend for yourself, so where do you start?
University Careers Service
Every University has some sort of careers service, they are full of helpful people who can give you advice on where to look for jobs and even show you some job lists in the industry you are hoping to break into. See your University web site for the location and more information on your Uni's careers service.
Advice from others
When I graduated, the first thing I did was ask my older brother for advice, which proved very helpful. Ask people who have been there and done it, friends, family, university mentor's even online communities and forum can help, but don't hang on to every word these people say because every experience is different and you should make as much as your own mind up as possible, after all it is the rest of your life were talking about here.
Internet
There are numerous job websites out there, Job Centre Plus, Monster, Fish4Jobs and Guardian Jobs online just to name a few, it's worth checking as much of them as possible, some let you upload your CV so prospective employers can have a look before even meeting you. Another tip, if you are looking to get into a certain industry, check out the websites of the major players in that particular industry, most of them post vacancies online.
Paper and Trade Magazines
Both have job listing, I found my first graduate job in the local paper, so their always worth looking into. Trade Magazines are good because they concentrate on a specific industry or a section of it.
Carry on studying
Some people are not quite ready to go into the working world yet, if you want to further your knowledge or obtain a higher qualification, maybe staying on at University and study for a masters degree or a PHD is for you.
Play to your Strengths
Remember to concentrate on your key skills and try to highlight them as much as possible, this can help when looking for a job, you can see if you would be suitable for the role the employee is looking for
If you have any questions regarding graduation or have anything to add, please don't hesitate to leave a comment or get in touch.
Good Luck!
